Periwinkle and Boxwood: Two Evergreen Garden Stars

Periwinkle (Vinca minor)

Periwinkle is a low, spreading evergreen perfect for groundcover. Its slender stems and evergreen leaves quickly form a lush carpet, reaching about 30 cm tall year-round. In spring, it sprouts vibrant blue flowers and fresh light-green shoots.

This plant adapts to almost any soil, tolerates full shade — rare for flowering plants — and thrives best in mildly acidic, humus-rich ground. It’s more reliable in lowlands, as high-altitude cold areas can damage it. Periwinkle spreads vegetatively, so it's best to give it space — otherwise, it will happily take over! It’s an excellent cover beneath all trees and shrubs, including conifers and fruit trees.

Boxwood (Buxus)

Boxwood is a compact shrub featuring dense branches and glossy, round-to-oval leathery leaves. While approximately 30 species exist, only a few thrive locally. Boxwood is incredibly hardy — drought, frost, rain, and wind don’t bother it. It grows in sun, shade, or part shade and propagates easily via cuttings.

Although slow-growing, it responds well to pruning and shaping — ideal for ornamental topiary. Just remember: trimmed plants need extra feeding, as vigorous regrowth can weaken them. Even beginners can maintain healthy, elegant plants with minimal care. Use boxwood for hedges, bed edging, garden accents, and even bonsai. Its dense timber is prized by artists and woodworkers for its durability and fine texture.
